What is Kagamimochi?

  • Kagamimochi is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration made of rice cakes. *Mochi = rice cake
  • Generally, two round rice cakes are stacked on top of each other and oranges are placed on top.
  • This decoration is offered to Toshigami, the god of grain.
  • During the New Year, the god is believed to be inside the Kagamimochi.
  • The name "Kagamimochi" comes from the fact that the round rice cake resembles an old mirror.
  • It is said that in samurai residences, armor and helmets were displayed in the tokonoma (alcove) and the kagamimochi was displayed in front of them.

How to decorate?

  1. On a "Sanpo" wooden box, Japanese paper is laid.
  2. Place round rice cakes on top of the sanpo box.
  3. Place orange on top of mochi. *Tie a "Mizuhiki"(red and white paper strings/charm) on mochi.
  4. You can input mochi, orange and accessories in the sanpo box after New year.
